I was not able to accompany my group on the day our class visited Rue de l'Odeon, and since I don't have a digital camera I will show you what I saw in a some words.

When I stood in front of the bookshops it was cold, and some wind brought the rain in sideways so that reasonably there were not any passers-by. Shadows were exaggerated by street lamps no taller than a first story window, and so seeing myself under German occupation, war-time curfews, and war-induced fear on a street extinguished of contemporary friendliness was fairly simple. I could imagine the smell of all the books kept in the apartment above me and the feeling of being surrounded by hundreds of published affairs while playing a role in an open story that is World War 2.

Looking down the Boulevard de Saint Germain, a hoard of buses and cars took to the wet road. I thought on a night that you would seek outside of your home, on a night when you had to go out for a walk, and seeing now, climate-controlled luxury vehicles with dvd players behind the driver's head, what nightlife holds our attention when a heavy moon makes a joke of our "acute vision". The blinking green crosses and highlighted shoe windows make for great business when recognition is low at day.

On my walk home, I found I could not answer what is so disorienting about a night that raises from the street and over my head.
